150 MPG? AFS Trinity Extreme Hybrid XH-150

In 2006, AFS Trinity Power Corporation filed a patent hoping their technology could make hybrids pay for themselves.  Last week at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, the company showed off their new plug in SUV called the “XH-150”.  Their intention is to license their ultracapacitor technology to other automakers.

The XH150 Extreme Hybrid  is different from other plug in hybrids because they use what they call "Fast Energy Storage" Ultracapacitors with lithium ion battery packs.   The ultracapacitors will store the regenerative braking energy and then deliver that power back when the hybrid’s motor needs fast acceleration. The vehicle went from 0 to 60 in 6.9 seconds using both electricity and gasoline. They tried the vehicle on just electricity and it took 11.5 seconds.   Those are not bad numbers... it's a start.

The Extreme Hybrid™ Plug-in drive train is composed of five primary sub-systems:

(1) advanced lithium batteries recharged at night with off-peak power from the grid;

(2) Fast Energy Storage™ using ultracapacitors for acceleration and regenerative braking;

(3) advanced power electronics and control software;

(4) internal combustion engine; and

(5) electric traction motor and generator. In miles per petroleum gallon, the XH-150™ plug-in hybrid SUV achieves 150 MPG.

Wow, this car looks like it's going to cost $200k or more.

Again, something I can't afford.
What about the little people??

Even better would be a conversion kit for a pick up. Or any other gas vehicle.
